Sullivan's Island Vacation Activities
Sullivan’s Island is lovely seaside town
located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway
just just across the bridge from Mount Pleasant, down the beach
from the Isle of Palms and 15 minutes from downtown Charleston.
The lifestyle is casual and unhurried. Most residents
tend to socialize on two blocks of Middle Street where a number
of restaurants & pubs are located. The 2 miles of beach is
wide and helps to make for the perfect day in the sun.
The history of Sullivan’s Island is plentiful
and evidence of this can still be seen today. The first Patriot
victory of the Revolutionary War occurred during June of 1776.
Fort Moultrie also saw early action of the Civil War and was again
used during World War II to watch for enemy submarines. The bunkers
and battlements are still there today. It is said that Edgar Allan
Poe was stationed here in 1827-1828 and it was during this time
he wrote The Gold Bug using the island for the story’s background.
